.Best DJ Night: A left-field electronic party

Bottom Feeder at Club Oasis

Though it’s still best known for hosting the tightest reggae and dancehall DJ nights in the East Bay, Club Oasis has gone off the beaten track in recent years. In addition to being a hotbed for Latin and African music, it’s now one of the best places to catch deep house or glitchy electronica — and it hosts what may be the East Bay’s only regular goth and industrial night, featuring DJ Mike W. and guests. If you’re looking for music that’s challenging, the best event to check out is Oasis’ monthly “Bottom Feeder,” a left-field electronic music party. Arguing that the ambient, dot-com-oriented sounds of popular house DJs like Miguel Migs have suddenly become massively dated, Bottom Feeder DJs David Marks, Brian Walls, and Christine Tocalino opt for a more anti-establishment, punk-rock kinda vibe. Combining glitchy laptop sounds with slick video projections of animated digital images, they render a medium-size Afro-Caribbean dance club into a kind of industrial Berlin-meets-hypermodern Tokyo. Most Oakland clubgoers aren’t ready for it.
