Players of disc golf traded golfballs for flying discs two decades ago, but for some reason, the courses never really came along. Maybe it’s the hippie ethic of playing “golf” for free, but very few cities provide the financial oomph to put in eighteen concrete tee pads and special metal-netted baskets to catch the discs. Moraga scrimped on the pads but installed nine baskets as well as course signage in ’82, and still offers East Bay disc golfers a blessed alternative to the smelly water-hazard-loaded, needle-spiked death course Berkeley calls Aquatic Park. Moraga’s remoteness is its strength. Grab some pals and head out on Highway 24, making a right after the Caldecott Tunnel. You’ll find yourself in sunny, grassy, dusty rolling hills with views of Mount Diablo as well as of your disc arcing across acres of airspace into some trees. The course challenges the legs, the eyes, and your sense of pride, which makes its playability far outrank its initial appearance.
