.Best Comedy Night: Jokes that won’t insult your intelligence

Smug Shift Comedy at the Stork Club

Most of us know what to expect at a comedy show, right? The same old dirty jokes about cunnilingus and genitalia; the gay guy whose gestures most closely resemble those of Shenehneh from Martin; the perfunctory setups that inevitably begin with a guy onstage asking if anybody ever heard of such-and-such, and then proceeding to talk at length about such-and-such, regardless of the response. Enter local comedy duo Brent Weinbach and Moshe Kasher, founders of the acclaimed sketch show Boom Time, who, thank god, will never deign to underestimate the intelligence of their audience. Their on-again, off-again, recently resurrected Smug Shift comedy showcase features some of the funniest, most imaginative minds in the East Bay, placing up-and-comers Nico Santos and Drennon Davis alongside established comedians like Kevin Avery and Will Franken. Usually bookended with musical performances by local notables like Liam Carey and Bart Davenport, Smug Shift offers a winning combination of well-paced off-the-cuff quipping and stuff written ahead of time — sometimes by folks so off the beaten track that they’d have to smoke a lot of weed just to write something intelligible for the average mind. Weinbach and Kasher are hunks, to boot.
