.Best Band Collective: Least selfish way to get to the top

Thread Productions

Copromotion is the name of the game for Thread Productions, a familial alliance between four San Francisco bands frustrated with going it alone. In the Bay Area indie music market — crowded with talent yet comparatively devoid of industry — it can be difficult to ascend beyond the ranks of the critically lauded and financially challenged. Tartufi, Silian Rail, Birds and Batteries, and Low Red Land opted to take matters into their own hands last September by forming a music cooperative designed to pool resources and elevate its members’ profiles. Toward this end, a few guidelines: Everyone goes to everyone else’s shows; an eight-song sampler promotes all four bands; if one band gets press, the others are mentioned; tour, press, and label contacts are shared. It’s a selfless aspiration toward the greater good, in which the success of the unit becomes the success of the individuals — a plan both practical and idealistic.
