.8:20 p.m. Tuesday: Best Barbecued Lamb

Doug's Barbecue

Smack-dab in the heart of grimy, funky Emeryville — not to be confused with stylish high-tech Emeryville — is the best barbecued lamb joint you’re likely to find this side of the East Texas outback. Doug Kuies, the seventy-plus-year-old firemaster at Doug’s Barbecue, has been smokin’ up the intersection of San Pablo Avenue and 40th Street, right next to the 24/580 overpass, for over thirty years. While he’s rightly famous for his delicious barbecued chicken, juicy rubbed pork ribs and beef ribs, and admirably tender sliced brisket, lots of joints smoke those cuts. What you’re here for is his barbecued lamb (sandwich for $7.55 or dinner for $10.07 plus tax). Even if you’re not a fan of lamb meat, this is not to be missed. Don’t forget to also check out the smoked turkey and the terrific coleslaw and sweet potato pie. Plenty of parking in front. Take-out orders only; closed Mondays.
