.4:25 p.m. Friday: Best Local Microbrewery

Drake's Brewing Co.

Drake’s Brewing Company was launched by Roger Lind in 1989, which made it one of the first microbreweries in America. Lind had bounced around as brewmaster for several local brewpubs, so he knew what he wanted — quality beer without a bar. He created exactly that when he crafted his first fine brews, which were only available in other people’s bars. A few years ago, he sold his brewery and became a teacher, but his legacy lives on in the Jolly Roger, a high-alcohol seasonal brew only available in November and December. Fortunately, his other excellent brews are available year-round, both on tap and bottled. While Drake’s Amber Ale, Blonde Ale, Hefeweizen, and IPA are excellent beers, their seasonal brews are even better. Since spring has sprung, check out the Sir Francis Stout, and in a few months Expedition Ale will venture into your neighborhood. Best of all, if you’re in the mood, wander by any Friday between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. to taste everything currently available.
