.2:30 p.m. Weekdays: Best Place for Quality On-Leash Time with Fido

Inspiration Point

In this category, unlike the off-leash one, it’s best to avoid the crowds. That’s why you’ll want to avoid early-morning, late-afternoon, and weekend walks at Tilden Park’s Inspiration Point trail if your dog doesn’t walk a straight line. (Too many baby strollers and bicyclists who come flying around corners.) But early on weekday afternoons, this is the place to be. High in the Berkeley Hills, the trail gives dogs and their human companions eight miles (out and back) of paved walking pleasure, with views that’ll take your breath away on a clear day. You’ll have the bay on one side and the San Pablo Reservoir on the other as you traverse the gentle slopes through rolling hills. There’s enough greenery at the edges of the path for sniffing around and plenty of critters to observe, but not as much opportunity to pick up ticks and horsetails as on Tilden’s unpaved hikes.
