.11:30 a.m. Saturday: Best Walking Lunch

A Taste of Africa

The Saturday Ashby Flea Market is just big enough to tour while eating off your collection of precariously perched plates and paper baskets. The Cameroonian family that operates a trailer-size food stand at the market on Saturdays and a restaurant across the street on weekdays starting at 3:00 p.m. produces the most amazing food in the most minuscule of kitchens. Even if you’ve already brunched, pick up a side of molten, caramelized fried plantains. And the vegetarian or meat-bearing stews, from the ndole with ground peanuts and vegetables to the koki with corn and cornmeal, are good enough to drive you to distraction. You may forget to share your food with your companions. You may forget you’re supposed to be shopping. You may have to sit on the curb until you scrape every last morsel off your plate.
