Things were looking grim when Uptown Oakland's Hawker Fare (2300 Webster St.) announced that it would be closed indefinitely after masked vandals lit a trash can on fire outside the restaurant early on Saturday morning, melting the restaurant's electrical meters.

But the repair process has been relatively quick, and owner James Syhabout confirmed that Hawker Fare will reopen for dinner tonight, July 25, at 5 p.m. The restaurant will subsequently resume its regular business hours.

Syhabout told What the Fork that in addition to the electrical meter issue, there was smoke and water damage in the kitchen, and much of the restaurant's perishable inventory was lost.

"We pretty much had to start from scratch," Syhabout said.
"[It] was like opening the restaurant from day one again."

Syhabout owns two other Oakland restaurants — the Michelin-starred Commis (3859 Piedmont Ave.) and the soon-to-come Rockridge gastropub Box and Bells, whose opening has been pushed back until later this year, according to Diablo Dish's most recent update.
