Free Cake! Punsters, Do Your Best (or Worst)

The newest arrival to Emeryville’s Powell Street Plaza is a franchise of Nothing Bundt Cakes (5745 Christie Ave.), a Las Vegas-based chain of bakeries serving, you guessed it, nothing but bundt cakes — “modern yet nostalgic” versions of those ’70s throwbacks, in a variety of sizes.

This is the first I’ve heard of the chain, but I guess they do a brisk mail-order business. Yelpers seem to love the Fremont location, and one poster in a Chowhound thread from a couple years back says his/her favorite flavor is the marble.

The Emeryville shop is already open, but it will be hosting a series of grand opening events that will culminate on Saturday, July 14 with a promotion in which the first 50 customers that day will receive a “Free Bundtlets for a Year” card.

Lucky for you, to drum up some interest, the shop is offering What the Fork readers a chance to win free cakes without having to stand in line at ten o’clock on a Saturday morning: Previously, we crowned a champion of meat poetry in this space. Now, in honor of “Nothing Bundt Cakes,” I’m calling for you punsters out there to channel your inner William Shakespeare or Oscar Wilde. Come up with a cake- or other dessert-related pun — the best/funniest/cleverest/most groan-inducing you can manage. Bonus points for originality (i.e. nothing I’ll find on Google).

Post your pun in the comments, or tweet it to me @theluketsai. The deadline is the end of the day on Tuesday. I’ll pick my favorite, or — if there are enough good ones — I’ll pick a top five and then select the winner randomly.

Winner gets one of those “Free Bundtlets for a Year” cards, good for one single-serving-sized cake a month for the next twelve months. Go to it!

Apparently Alice Cooper is a fan of Nothing Bundt Cakes.
