Mid-Week Menu: Waffle Boss Goes AWOL, eVe Goes Peruvian, Adagia Goes Campus

Welcome to the Mid-Week Menu, a weekly roundup of restaurant openings, chef arrivals and departures, and other nuggets of gossip from the East Bay dining scene.

1) Eater learns that Sarah Kirnon's replacement at Hibiscus will be a rascally-looking chap named Gregory Leon, fresh from a stint at San Francisco's Frenchie lunch spot Mirtille. The new Hibiscus menu? Out with the Caribbean, in with the South.

2) Chocolate-crazed Bittersweet Cafe in Rockridge will soon launch a second location on Broadway, between 14th and 15th. Looks like they'll be serving breakfast and lunch, possibly sans cocoa.

3) An intrepid tipster spied a new bánh mì and crepe shop opening in Old Oakland this Friday called Food Coma, with the goofy tagline "eat. drink. eat. pass out. repeat." These guys certainly paid top dollar to snag the phone number 451-COMA.

4) Food and Wine magazine has a lovely profile of Chef Sylvan Mishima Brackett from Peko Peko Catering. Favorite line: "he clambers over hillocks of wild watercress, his bee-striped sneakers growing damp."

5) Anybody know what happened to Waffle Boss? It was supposed to open in Temescal late last year, but the website is dead, its Facebook page disappeared, and we can't seem to track down owner Peter Fikaris.

Waffle Boss, where art thou?

6) Experimental Berkeley restaurant eVe is completely reinventing itself as a Peruvian chicken joint called Brasa. After taking a hiatus for a couple of months, they'll be re-opening within weeks.

7) Freehouse, a new Berkeley bar/restaurant in the old Adagia space, is now open for business. The menu runs heavy on meaty comfort foods, with the requisite "sustainable when possible" verbiage underneath. Robust beer selection, too.

8) Inside Scoop brings more info on Old Oakland's upcoming wine bar, District. In a word: whiskey.
