Remedy Readies Berkeley Spinoff

Perk up, Third Wave coffee geeks: Remedy number two is opening this week in Berkeley. Owner Todd Spitzer told What the Fork he’s putting the final touches on his Temescal café’s sibling in the Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive, in the courtyard space that once housed Café Muse.

Since January, Remedy has had a temporary weekday presence at BAM/PFA in the form of the Airstream trailer tricked out as rolling coffee dispenser. Like the trailer, the Berkeley Remedy’s been designed with the help of Spitzer buddy Mark Samuel — Spitzer called the new space “ubermodern” and “sleek,” inspired by its arty surroundings, tweaked with Temescal-grade eclectic finishes. “We pimped it out,” Spitzer said.

The former Cafe Muse has been pimped out to look sleek.

This week’s Berkeley opening starts with coffee service (house bean source: San Francisco's Ritual Roasters) and baked goods from longtime Remedy vendor Celeste Cooper, whose Butterfat Bakery is expanding (Cooper — who’s been using Remedy as her production bakery — is said to be looking for kitchen space of her own). Within weeks at both Remedys, Spitzer plans to roll out a radically bumped-up food menu overseen by Shannon Pence.

An assistant to Alice Waters in a previous life, Pence has developed a morning menu that includes an egg sandwich and breakfast pizza, and a lunch menu of hot and cold sandwiches, salads, soups, and personal-size pizzas, prepped and cooked on site. Spitzer described Pence’s ingredient sourcing as local and organic — “all the same peeps other good places are using.”

Remedy Berkeley is at 2625 Durant Avenue. Check Facebook and Twitter for launch-date updates.
