1. Six young people died — at least five of them Irish students — when a fourth-floor balcony collapsed during a 21st birthday party in Berkeley, NBC Bay Area reports. At least seven other people were also injured in the collapse and some of them have life-threatening injuries. The Irish students were in Berkeley to work and study for the summer. The Kittredge Street building — the Library Gardens Apartments — which is close to Berkeley High School, is owned by the Houston-based company Greystar.
2. The California Supreme Court unanimously upheld so-called “inclusionary zoning” laws that require developers to include affordable housing in their projects, the LA Times$ reports. The case concerned San Jose’s inclusionary zoning law, but applies to all such laws in the state. Developers had challenged the law and indicated that they may appeal to the US Supreme Court.
