Last night, a 27-year-old man wanted in two May 20 Berkeley shootings was arrested in Oakland.

"Collaboration between the City of Berkeley Police Department and the City of Oakland Police Department led to the arrest of the suspect in the May 20 shooting of a man and woman in the 1700 block of 63rd Street" in Berkeley, reported Sgt. Mary Kusmiss, BPD Public Information Officer. "BPD and OPD had been exchanging information and tracking Doran Williams., Jr. ... who was wanted for the crimes."

In the May 20 crime, a man and woman sitting in a car were shot at around 11 a.m. According to police reports issued soon afterward, the suspect was described as an African American man in his twenties between 5 feet 7 inches and 6 feet tall, who was wearing a dark sweatshirt at the time of the shooting. Within a few weeks, it was announced that Oakland resident Williams was wanted on a no-bail arrest warrant for one count of attempted murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the Berkeley double shooting.

"Last night, June 16, 2010, OPD officers followed Williams from a motel in the City of Richmond to the City of Oakland," Kusmiss continued. "Williams fled from the car he was driving and after a brief foot chase, he was taken into custody without further incident. Doran Williams, Jr. is a member of the North Oakland Bushrod gang who call themselves the 'Cold Gunnaz.' The motive for the shootings and whether this is part of an ongoing Oakland/Berkeley border feud is still being investigated.

"On May 20, 2010, at approximately 11:03 a.m., the Berkeley Police Department (BPD) responded to reports of gunshots in front of an apartment building in the 1700 of 63rd Street in south Berkeley. Patrol officers found two victims, a 39 year-old male and a 57 year-old female. Both were critically injured and remain hospitalized.

"Williams was booked into the BPD Jail for one count of PC187(a)/664(a) (attempted murder) and one count of PC 245 (a)(2) (assault with a deadly weapon/firearm). Williams is scheduled to be arraigned on June 18, 2010.
Anyone with any additional information regarding these crimes is encouraged to call the Homicide Detail at (510) 981-5741 or the BPD Non-emergency Line at (510) 981-5900."
