Oakland Teachers Union Still Doesn’t Get It

The Oakland Teachers' union is threatening a one-day strike on March 24 because the school board won’t agree to the union’s demand for a raise, the Trib reports. Union President Betty Olson-Jones says the union would rather settle, but if the union goes through with its threat, it will inconvenience tens of thousands of Oakland families.

The union obviously hopes that parents will pressure the board to give into the union’s demands so that they won’t have to take more time off from work to stay home with their kids. But a strike could backfire on the union, because many of those parents have taken pay cuts of their own during the recession and may not have sympathy for teachers who are demanding a 15 percent raise over three years from a district that is facing a $39 million deficit next year.
