AC Transit Gets $6.7 Million in Federal Funds

AC Transit will receive $6.7 million in federal stimulus funds as a result of a decision by the Obama administration to pull money from BART’s Oakland airport connector project because of civil rights violations. Yet even with the influx of unexpected cash, an AC Transit spokesman told the Trib that the agency will still go ahead with its planned across-the-board service cuts next month, which will severely impact low-income East Bay residents.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission decided yesterday to allot the $6.7 million to AC Transit and send millions to other area agencies because federal officials had threatened to take away from the Bay Area the full $70 million earmarked for the airport connector if it didn’t redirect the funds by March 5. AC Transit also is laying the groundwork for a new $14 million parcel tax this November, in an effort to get property owners to tax themselves again to help shore up the agency’s troubled finances.
