Moderate GOP candidate Tom Campbell has bowed out of the governor’s race and jumped into the 2010 US Senate race, the San Jose Mercury News reports. Campbell couldn’t overcome the huge amounts of money that GOP gubernatorial candidates Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner are pouring into that race. So he’s now taking on former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and Irvine Assemblyman Chuck DeVore for the GOP Senate nomination. The winner in the June primary will face Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer in November.
Campbell, who is pro-choice and pro-same-sex marriage, will position himself as the alternative to the conservative Fiorina and DeVore who likely will battle it out for right-wing votes. DeVore, in particular, is already the darling of the Tea Party Movement. Campbell also should be able to tap into GOP donors who were reluctant to fund his gubernatorial campaign because of Whitman and Poizner’s huge warchests.
