East Bay Will Fail New Obama Smog Rules

Air quality in the East Bay is so bad that both Alameda and Contra Costa counties will fail miserably under new smog rules proposed by the Obama Administration’s Environmental Protection Agency. As a result, much of the East Bay could be forced to adopt strict new regulations to limit smog in the next several years that could prove costly to the region, but should greatly improve air quality.

According to the Chron, the EPA proposes limiting smog to between 60 and 70 parts per billion over an eight-hour period. From 2006 to 2008, Alameda County averaged 81 parts per billion, and Contra Costa County, 78 parts per billion. Both counties failed to meet smog standards under the Bush-era rules as well.
