Oakland’s Free Downtown Shuttle Service

The Oakland City Council is expected to approve tonight a new — and free — shuttle service that will connect uptown and downtown with the Jack London Square area. The weekday shuttle will begin operations in May or June and is being financed predominantly by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, and will be operated by AC Transit, the CoCo Times reports.

Kudos to Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan, a transportation wonk and former AC Transit board member, for pushing hard for this smart idea. The owners of Jack London Square — Jim Falaschi and Ellis Partners — also deserve credit for pitching in private funds to make the shuttle happen. Our only concern is that the weekday shuttle, which begins at 7 a.m., will stop running at 7 p.m., which seems a bit early to serve the square’s new eateries.
