.Hills Fire Hazard Clean-Up Must Wait

The planned clean-up of fire hazards in the East Bay hills, which has been in the works since Oakland’s devastating firestorm in 1991, will have to wait at least two more years, the Trib reports. FEMA has decided that the clean-up, which involves the removal of eucalyptus trees, requires an extensive environmental review first. The City of Oakland, UC Berkeley, and the East Bay Regional Park District had been hoping that FEMA would skip the review and release $5 million in grants for the clean-up. But some local activists objected and FEMA ultimately decided that the review is necessary.
