Bay Bridge May Need New Fix

Tue, Nov 3, 2009 at 9:52 AM

The new repair of the San Francisco Bay Bridge may not hold up over the long-term, so CalTrans will probably shut down the span again in the next several months to install a more permanent fix, according to the Chron. CalTrans officials are concerned the new repair may fail under some severe wind conditions. The previous repair of the same trouble spot snapped in strong winds last week, sending 5,000 pounds of steel onto the upper deck of the bridge.

Agency officials had previously said there was no way for them to fully test the design of the new repair while installing it on the bridge. CalTrans chief engineer Richard Land said engineers were seeking "a better solution … something more robust, better performing," and described the repair work they completed yesterday as "a temporary fix," the Chron reported.
