Cal Football Makes Millions

UC Berkeley's football and basketball teams are extremely profitable, but they don't make enough money to make up for all of the school's lesser-known, money-losing sports programs, according to UC officials, including Athletic Director Sandy Barbour. The university officials made those comments on KNBR radio in response to a Chronicle article that some have interpreted as saying that Cal football was losing money and forcing the university to keep it afloat with subsidies.

The UC officials said on the radio program that the university's entire athletic department is projected to lose about $6.5 million this year, because the big money-making sports teams, football and basketball, don't earn enough extra money to pay for all of the other unprofitable sports.
