.State Workers to Strike?

The union representing 95,000 state workers has authorized a strike in response to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s order that state employees take three unpaid furlough days a month for the next year, according to the Chron. The Service Employees International union represents about half of all state employees. Schwarzenegger ordered the furlough days to help balance the state’s $26 billion budget deficit. The furlough days amount to about a 14 percent reduction in pay for state workers, who had refused to take significant pay cuts during contract negotiations — as other unions have done throughout California. If the union goes on strike, it could effectively shut down state services.
