Slap Hitter: Last At-Bats

Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 7:27 PM

Tomorrow, Sunday is the end of the road for the '08 Athletics. The website that best covers the homeboys athleticsnation has run out of things to say, with many of its posts apologizing for uncreative titles and sighing with headers like, "writer's block". Truth is there hasn't been a lot to say since July. A few records of dubious value, but an overall record that will end Sunday with a thud.

Remember how the year began? A late-inning loss to the insufferable Sox of Red and it followed by having every pitcher who picked up the opening ball that week traded to the National League by the time the All-Star game wrapped up.

A's fans can still follow their favorite hurlers into October; Harden's Cubs, Blanton's Phillies will be featured on the networks. And you can feast on Jason Kendall if the Brewers get into the post-season, Ted Lilly if you've got a Cub thing going and Andre Ethier if you like to torture yourself about the prospects who got away.

But between now and then, there is one more day for the A's. It won't really be their day, it will be the NFL's, the Mets and Brewers, White Sox, Twins and NASCARs, but I plan to take a moment if I can find them on the tube, and if not spin the dial one more time to hear them on their wretched AM signal and know that this year's version will live on in obscurity and trivial fun over the years (that guy Jack Hannahan was our regular third baseman for six months)? Still it's sad to say so long to summer. Realizing that we'll never have to see the black home jerseys except on the Raiders though will make it all go down a little easier.— Kibby Kleiman
