Slap Hitter: Settling for being a Baseball fan

Mon, Jul 28, 2008 at 2:56 PM

The home team's out of the race, the fantasy team is failing and there are three months left of baseball to play. (Just two for the A's). It's an opportunity by gum, to become a baseball fan for the rest of the season. Every division (but ours) has a great race ahead. This is a defining moment fans, if you love baseball you should still be excited. Take a week or so to mourn lost opportunities but then if you can't get fired up about five whiz bang division chases, friend, you may as well watch football players who aren't even going to make the team fight, sweat and be asked to sing their alma mater's fight songs.

There's something for everybody. If you hate the Red Sox, maybe the Yankees and Rays will take two playoff spots. Loathe the Yankees? Maybe Tampa and the Bosox will knock them out. Hate them both? Um, that's not going to work.

Both the Chicago teams are waiting to crack in some amusingly agonizing fashion. Milwaukee and Minnesota are 1,2 and 2,1 in their respective divisions to their irritation of both Chicagos. Philly and New York will insult each other, swoon and recover while Florida (A's East) may sneak past both of them. The National League West is obligated to send a team and it may be the Rockies coming back from way out once again. In short: there is plenty of reason to watch Baseball Tonight and flip through box scores.

There are actually so many good story lines, I think the national media may not be able to beat them all to death. I'm rooting for a scrum until the finish line. If my team can't be part of the chase I think I'm capable of shifting my attention to the front runners and still look over my shoulder now and then to make sure that my team is at least still breathing.— Kibby Kleiman
