Attentive readers may recall the panic that ensued last month, when federal immigration officials conducted surveillance of suspected illegal immigrants near Oakland's Stonehurst elementary school. On Friday, Congresswoman Barbara Lee came to a packed church in North Oakland and vowed to put the fear of God in immigration officials; in fact, she promised she would "take them on big-time," according to the CoCo Times. Lee claimed she had used her position on the House Appropriations Subcommittee, which finalizes the budget for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, to press officials not to act recklessly near churches, schools, hospitals, or other "critical community institutions." Federal officials insist they were doing their job responsibly during the bizarre panic last month, a claim that has been met with considerable skepticism by local community leaders.
