You've been to plenty of craft fairs, trunk shows, and warehouse sales, but have you been to one that your boyfriend wanted to go to? This weekend, the geeks will descend upon San Mateo for the annual Maker Faire, where, among the cornucopia of the strange, unusual, brilliant, and useless inventions and creations by everyday people or giant corporations, there will be a "MindReadingMartiniMaker."
About 45,000 people showed up to last year's Maker Faire, which is put on by MAKE and CRAFT magazines, and the organizers are expecting an even bigger turnout this year. Among the highlights: The unveiling of new line of robotic toys by Disney, power-tool drag races, an electric giraffe, bicycle rodeo, the Life-Sized Mousetrap, an orchestra of musical toys, and rocket-making - for the kids! That, plus hundreds of other makers will display their creations. It ain't cheap tho. (See details, below).
When: Saturday, May 3, 2008 (10am 10pm); Sunday, May 4, 2008 (11am 6pm)
Where: The San Mateo County Event Center and Fairgrounds (2495 South Delaware Street, San Mateo)
Admission: Adults: $25/$20 in advance; Students (13-21): $15/$10 in advance; Youth (4-12): $10/$5 in advance; and children under 4 are free
Don't forget to bring the sunscreen!
The Beauty Bar Collection Launch & After-Party
It was just a matter of time before the Beauty Bar (the place to drink, primp, and dance) launched its own line of products and accessories. (We've always thought that drinking and shopping should go together, and there should be a mall where you can go bar-hopping and boutique-hopping simultaneously, late-night style. When you open that, let us know.) This weekend, the bar will celebrate the launch of the Beauty Bar Collection, which thus far includes designs from six designers of the Beauty Bar logo (looks like T-shirts, so far). The line will be available at Azalea Boutique in Hayes Valley and at the bar itself starting May 15 (if you're just dying to snatch up one of these). The line will eventually expand to include jewelry, accessories, and a nail polish brand with Urban Decay.
Details: Launch Party at Azalea Boutique, 411 Hayes Street, SF, Saturday, May 3, 2008, 4-7 p.m.
After-Party at Beauty Bar, 2299 Mission Street, SF, Saturday, May 3, 10 p.m.
