Are Your Love Handles Contributing to Global Warming?

Berkeley author Michael Pollan has already discussed how food and fossil fuels are linked (i.e., "A strawberry is four calories. It takes ten calories of fossil fuel energy to get it to you."), but today we received a press release in our inbox about another global warming contributor, though far less recognized: fat. As in, how much more gas does it take to drive you around if you're overweight?

Critics To Hold March Against ICE

Over the past year, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has taken to meddling in a local labor dispute with workplace raids and interrogation of undocumented workers. The agency, which is part of Homeland Security, has shown up on the doorstep of at least one worker fired by the Woodfin Suites, the Emeryville hotel that has been fighting the city's Measure C for the past two years. Measure C is the living wage ordinance that guarantees hotel workers better working conditions and pay. (See Whose Side Is ICE On?, 11/21/07)

Cal's plummeting football team is 6-6, they've lost six of its last seven games, and they're going bowling. The Bell Helicopter Armed Services Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas (home of the TCU Horned Frogs!) will be the venue for any fan wishing to spend New Year's Eve Day watching the Golden Bears play for the right to avoid a losing season.
