Anyone else around here notice that the professional football season is about done? Not for the playoff-bound, of course. And other teams even had riveting storylines in defeat: colorful insurrections, individual glories and dramas. But for fans of the Oakland Raiders? Talk about fading into the background - paint the Silver and Black a muted gray.

They didn't do anything worth paying attention to this season. Three quarterbacks, each one less scintillating than the one before. No great receiver or running back, maybe an exciting left guard or something. The defense - a big blah. The kickers have been good, but see what I mean? The Raiders didn't even do the grotesque number of penalties thing, which is at least good for a laugh.

This season fell in a forest and nobody heard it fall.

So, as the Raiders wrap up their season this weekend, gather together around a regulation sized low-definition TV set with folk you just kind of know, spread out the dry crackers and raise a cup of tap water to the season that was. Of course, the Raiders may yet provide a bit of color on the season. Because what would finish things up better than a blackout?
