Hyphen magazine founder and ex-Express staff writer Melissa Hung led the Bay Area’s charge to start a magazine that would attempt to relay, as the motto puts it, “Asian America Unabridged.” On the magazine’s fifth birthday, Hung is passing the editorial torch to Harry Mok. Interviewed by Jeff Yang for his Asian Pop column today on SFGate, Hung reflects on the ups and downs of shepherding a volunteer-run nonprofit through it’s early years, the challenges of representing a diverse yet oft-stereotyped community, and how small paper publications will face the digital age.
