Pizzaiolo's Open for Breakfast

If you drive by Pizzaiolo on your way to work in the morning, you may have noticed its green wooden benches out on the sidewalk. For about three weeks now, the rabidly popular Temescal shrine to thin-crust pizza has floated a limited breakfast menu -- namely, espresso drinks and toast. But not just any espresso, and not just any toast. On a recent morning, an espresso made from Blue Bottle Coffee Co. beans was as complex and aromatic as pine resin. And thick-cut Acme levain came with a choice of marmalades made by a Pizzaiolo staffer named Rachel. The quince was a beautiful carnelian red; other options were white guava-Meyer lemon, bergamot, and Seville orange. Hours are 7:00-11:00 a.m., Monday through Saturday. In coming weeks, look for sweet and savory pastry options. But even without, the restaurant's a cool place to absorb caffeine -- and, unlike at dinner, you can actually snag a table.
