News breaks over the weekend, so every Monday we get you back up to speed with While You Were Out:

* Just as you were going out the door late Friday afternoon, we broke the story of MediaNews beginning substantial layoffs at Bay Area newspapers and outsourcing jobs to India.

* After two strikes this year, Concord's John Muir Medical Center and its unions finally agreed to a new three-year contract that will boost wages substantially.

* The Chron reported that Cal State University system Chancellor Charles Reed is proposing to modify a "golden parachute" clause that allows CSU execs to keep collecting paychecks a year after they leave. The catch? The change would affect only new hires; Reed and his current colleagues would still get their payouts.

* The Dumbarton Rail Corridor project, which has so far cost twice its original estimate, is now not expected to reach completion until 2012.

* Pundits continued to probe the likely local effects of Nancy Pelosi's ascension to House Speakerhood.
