Without dwelling too much on the innate pretension of a title like The Pariah, the Parrot, the Delusion, it should be noted that the music doesn't fare much better. Dredg's stock-in-trade is passion and earnestness delivered via brooding, theatrical, occasionally understated hard rock. The band is certainly talented, but the more it tells you so, the less it matters.

Kush Arora, an East Bay native who's put down roots in San Francisco via popular club nights, delivers an innovative and enjoyable dance album melding futuristic electronica with a variety of Indian and Jamaican dance styles. Six talented emcees ice Kush's cake, as in "Wine Mek Me See You," where Bongo Chilli balances dancehall vocals over a pure bhangra beat.

One might call this summertime blues - the sort of upbeat, R&B- and soul-infected stuff crafted for dancing under the midday sun at a neighborhood street festival, refreshment in hand. Because it's not really blue at all: Singer Landon may lament about leaving a lover, but he's obviously already over it. The four-piece band is capable, cohesive, and, in the case of a few eight-minute songs, a bit adventurous.
At Lou's Pier 47 (300 Jefferson St., San Francisco) on June 2. 8 p.m., $5
The front cover depicts Obama holding up the continent of Africa, in case we didn't get "black president." The music, however, is quite diplomatic: an international blend that's more Afrobeat than funk, with horn flourishes rather than poppin' basslines at the fore - although Victor Sila's occasional James Brown yelp (as in I'm freaking oooouuuut) would have it otherwise.
At Mezzanine (444 Jessie St., San Francisco) on May 30. 9 p.m., $15
This San Francisco group's debut brings bright ideas to a dark corner of the indie-rock universe. Opener "Life Inside a Scream" features a bassline straight from one of Joy Division's less somber moments beneath a distinctly hummable vocal melody. "My New Heaven" is the Cure meets Slowdive: a wryly cheery, feedback-laden drone. Call them Interpol minus the long face.

After years of squabbling and several abortive proposals, Oakland finally figured out what to do with the eyesore at 1733 San Pablo Ave. that used to house Sweet Jimmie's blues club. San Francisco nightlife entrepreneur Michael O'Connor -- who now operates the Independent club on Divisadero St. -- has teamed up with Skyblaze Recordings owner Namane Mohlabene to open a new entertainment hub at the long-defunct San Pablo location. The new owners plan to redo the club's stucco facade and give it a more genteel, Victorian look. They'll divide the interior into a nightclub, two clothing boutiques and a high-end restaurant, Hibiscus. It will be a far cry from the old Jimmie's which fell into ill-repute after Jimmie's son David (aka "Sweet") took over the booking and turned it into a hyphy club. The place was a prime piece of real estate (right on the cusp of Uptown), but it became a stain on Oakland's nascent entertainment district.
Several people have tried -- and failed -- to turn the old Jimmie's into a new hip-hop or salsa club. These guys are a different story: The Independent has plenty of name recognition, and Mohlabene has a solid reputation in Oakland as a former liason to city council member Nancy Nadel and brother of the famed soul singer Goapele. At present he and O'Connor are slogging through the permit process, which should go smoothly. Last night Oakland City Planning Commission approved the proposal unanimously.
In addition to the previously announced lineup, this summer's Outside Lands Festival will feature at least another ten fine bands (including five locals, in bold): Conor Oberst & the Mystic Valley Band, Lucinda Williams, the Avett Brothers, Tea Leaf Green, Zion I, Bat for Lashes, Groundation, Los Campesinos!, Daronda with Nino Moschella, & Big Light. Pick your poison. The festival takes place August 28-30 in Golden Gate Park and tickets are available now.
Another Oakland indie album bearing the mark of garage impresario Greg Ashley (where isn't he these days?), No One and the Nobodies' intermittently interesting debut is too messy for its own good. Local music fans have more than enough places to turn for faux-vintage pop, rock, and folk without having to dig through one band's bedroom tapes.
