Manatee — "Which Way To Go" and "Theme (Dugong Sing-Along)"

The Oakland quartet Manatee has two new tracks out this week on the B-side of a seven-inch split with Stockton's Surfer Club. Manatee rocks hard and in a range of ways: the first track, “Theme (Dugong Sing-Along)” is instrumental, drawing on some surf-rock melodies, distorting the amps, and adding some chaotic Arena-rock-grade drums. “Which Way To Go” is a forceful cover of the Eighties hardcore band Big Boys, and it manages to make more noise than the original. The split is the first in a series called Nothing To Lose by Death Party Records

Kids On A Crime Spree — "Creep Out The Creeps"

Kids On A Crime Spree is the result of an obsession with Sixties power pop and Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. That much is obvious from listening to “Creep Out The Creeps” — the trio's latest single from Slumberland, out last week. But this track from the Oakland trio goes beyond emulation: Its brand of bubblegum is a new flavor, its fuzzy bass rattle adds a new dimension to an old genre, and its hand claps ... okay, nothing special about those, but who doesn't love hand claps?

Thee Oh Sees — "Minotaur" and "Toe Cutter - Thumb Buster"

This past Tuesday, SF's prolific Thee Oh Sees released another album, Floating Coffin, and you can stream two of the songs here. “Minotaur” is the quieter one: Between the popping guitar-driven verses is a languid hook that stretches the listener's ear into euphoria. The similarly quiet echoey verses of “Toe Cutter — Thumb Buster,” on the other hand, barely mask the distorted head-bobbing melodies that hold the rest of tune together. Thee Oh Sees will be playing the Brick and Mortar on April 29.
