BART boardmember Bob Franklin said today that he's stepping down from the BART board of directors next week and pulling out of the race for Oakland City Council in order to take a full-time job with BART. Franklin had planned to resign from the BART board at the end of this year, and was a candidate to replace Oakland Councilwoman Jane Brunner, who is vacating her North Oakland seat to run for city attorney.

Franklin, who had been considered to be one of the frontrunners in the council race, said he has accepted a job as access manager for BART. He will oversee transit connections with BART, from parking to buses to bikes. "I've been focused on access issues during my fourteen years at BART," he said.

Franklin has been on the BART board for more than seven years. Before that, he worked in the transit agency's finance department.

He said he has not yet decided who he will endorse in the city council race.
