More Insight Into What Went Down at Whole Foods Yesterday

One of the more incendiary anecdotes from yesterday's march — at least before the late-night violence eclipsed the day's actions — was the (brief) spate of vandalism at the Oakland Whole Foods, which was picked up nationally by Gawker and several other new outlets. Our beloved design team happened to be inside when all this went down, and as we tweeted at the time: "approx. 75 Whole Foods shoppers have been barricaded inside by protesters. a few are throwing rocks. one window broken… Protesters were hurling rocks and chairs at windows. Shoppers were held inside, away from glass; eventually let out thru back." (Later, it became clear that the vandalism came after reports circulated that the company had threatened to fire employees who participated in the strike.) Now, with videos of the incident cropping up all over YouTube, it's becoming clear that the vandalism was caused by a small group of people, apparently calling themselves the Black Bloc — and that that small group was fought off by a larger group of peaceful demonstrators.
