That's right, Oakland's airport is just sick with laser pointers targeting planes and potentially blinding pilots. Just ask the Associated Press, which reports that of the nation's airports, Oakland and San Jose "rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the number of reported laser strikes on aircraft." My God, laser strikes! And there were more than 1,200 of them around the country last year alone. But don't worry, agitated reader: "One San Jose officer says most people who shine laser pointers at aircraft aren't terrorists." So there's that.

Yeah, Chabot, sure. Blame it on the astronomers. Alert the clueless authorities and flight crews, 'cause that logical conclusion has evaded them. That's about the most ridiculous thing I've heard. I guess the Mt. Hamilton observatory is responsible for all the hits in San Jose? Most of Oakland's strikes are coming from neighborhoods near Hayward airport and up into San Lorenzo/San Leandro.
Chabot Space and Science Center is right along the flight path for the airlines, I wouldn't be surprised if most of those "strikes" are entirely accidental, as on a free star viewing night there are people pointing out stars and planets and such with their green laser pointers.
