San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is officially running for lieutenant governor, according to the Chron. And he immediately became the frontrunner to be the Democratic Party nominee in the June primary after state Senator Dean Florez quickly dropped out the race and endorsed him. However, the November general election could be a different story.
Likely Republican nominee Abel Maldonado, a moderate, might be able to run as the incumbent if Governor Schwarzenegger can push through his nomination to the post. Schwarzenegger picked Maldonado to replace Democrat John Garamendi after the lieutenant governor became the East Bay’s newest congressman. But last month, Democrats in the state Assembly refused to confirm Maldonado, and now that a prominent Democrat is running for the same position, Assembly members may decide to block Maldonado again.
