A's Owner Kisses Up to San Jose Mayor

Jonathan Riley —  Thu, Feb 18, 2010 at 2:19 PM

In a shameless display of pandering to the City of San Jose, Oakland A's co-owner Lew Wolff was scheduled to introduce Mayor Chuck Reed at his sold-out annual State of the City speech today, according to the Mercury News. Wolff's appearance, however, was not expected to be accompanied by any announcement about his efforts to move the A's to the South Bay. In other words, Wolff was just kissing up to Reed and symbolically showing his eagerness to dump Oakland.

Regarding the above comment, I guess it was just a coincidence that after Lew Woolf's introduction, Mayor Reed made it a point in his speech to address a spending initiative to build a ballpark for the A's in San Jose.** The disgraceful Lew Woolf is like clockwork. Every year at the start of Spring training, he does something to diss Oakland. Last year at this time, he basically told Oakland to go to hell. Given the combination of this awful owner and a no=name team, it's no wonder the team's attendence is sinking like a rock. I believe it's part of Woolf's plan to permantly alienate A's fans in Oakland. What a loser!
**Regarding a possible San Jose ballpark, it's outrageous for San Jose Mayor Reed to propose building a new ballpark while calling on City employees to take a 10 to 15% pay cut (as he did in his speech). The City of San Jose will have to spend tens of millions of $ to acquire three land parcels that are necessary to build the ballpark. The City will have to spend millions more on infrastructure improvements.

Lew Wolff also owns the San Jose Fairmont Hotel and the San Jose Earthquakes, so he does have significant ties to the San Jose area that have no connection or representation about his feelings about the A's in Oakland. He is a San jose businessman.
