Time to Crack Down on Parking Fraud

Robert Gammon —  Mon, Jan 4, 2010 at 10:11 AM

A new state law that went into effect January 1 allows cities to crack down on disabled parking fraud. The law, authored by San Francisco Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, lets cities charge motorists $250 to $1,000 for using a fake, stolen, or borrowed disabled parking placard, the Chron reports. Disabled parking fraud is a widespread problem in the Bay Area, and the City of San Francisco is jumping on the new law and will consider a proposal this week to raise fines from $100 to $825.

Oakland should waste no time taking up a similar measure, especially in light of its ongoing budget problems. Disabled parking fraud appears to be a significant problem in Oakland, especially in downtown and in some busy shopping districts, so raising fines substantially could bring in much-needed funds.

Check out 21st Street and the blocks around 1 Kaiser Plaza - lots of free parking (no meters, no kiosks)! Loads of $$$ being lost by Oakland every day.

Since when is parking fraud enforcement draconian? I am sick of whiny and entitled motorists that think the city should bend over for them. It's bad enough you guys are a fricking hazard to begin with. I wish OPD would step up enforcement of moving violations. Start ticketing for speeding, California roll through stops signs, and the selfish "my time is more important than the safety of others" recklessness. I ride a bicycle and I obey the laws, which is a hell of a lot more than EVERY motorist I see in Oakland. To the bmw yuppies on MLK turning right on Grand from a left hand lane, to the asshat that blew through a stop sign and almost myself, to the red light runner yesterday, YOU SUCK!

Psh fix parking and the fraud will be reduced dramatically. Our current parking policies are bad for local business, terrible actually, and appear driven by politician's short sightedness. Maybe if we had decent public transit then the outrageous parking fees and draconian enforcement might be seem more acceptable.
