Over at the Chron's blog universe, Echa Schneider/V Smoothe points out that in an effort to keep Oakland's finances from sliding into the deepest pits of Tartarus, the city has shut down for the entire week. If you have any business with the city of Oakland, other than to scream as your house burns down or visit the interior of one of the city's pleasant patrol cars, best think about rescheduling. But don't imagine that you can park for free, either. That part of the city's operations is still running like clockwork.

Oakland is closing at the quietest time of the year so that funds are available to keep libraries open, rec centers running and streets fixed. Sadly, many cities are being forced into actions like this because of the economy and state rip-offs of local govt funds. SF is facing a $500+M budget deficit and San Jose is looking at a $92+M budget hole. Like Oakland, their only options are a combination of layoffs, unpaid furloughs and limited revenue increases. Of the 2000 city employees (not fire or police), 400 jobs were cut last year.
