San Jose Group Opposes A’s Planned Move to South Bay

A San Jose group, with ties to the San Francisco Giants, has launched an effort to stop the Oakland A’s planned move to San Jose, according to the San Jose Mercury News. The effort comes as the City of San Jose moves forward on an environmental impact report for a proposed A’s stadium. The San Francisco Giants oppose the move because they own the territorial rights to the South Bay and say the A’s would harm them financially.

But San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed supports the A’s proposed relocation, pointing to a recent city-commissioned report that concluded that a ballpark would generate $130 million annually for the local economy. The controversy in San Jose also follows the City of Oakland’s announcement last week that it was pushing two new ballpark sites in Jack London Square.
