The former Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in the Oakland hills, which has been strewn with overgrown weeds and hollowed-out buildings for more than a year, is finally going to get cleaned up. According to the Chron and the Trib, Lehman Brothers, the bankrupt co-owner of the property with developer SunCal, has agreed to pay $3.7 million to clean-up the property.
Oakland City Attorney John Russo hammered out the agreement, with an assist from local neighborhood groups. The clean-up will include demolishing about 90-plus buildings on site, removal of toxic asbestos, and vegetation management.

Not so fast. There aren't any orders signed by the judge on the bankruptcy court docket yet. Unless Lehman is coming up with money from one of the many NON-bankrupt Lehman subsidiary entities, this still needs to wind its way through the courts.
The good news for residents though, is that Alameda County D.A. Nancy O'Malley - who was at Thursday's press conference - seems to have responded to residents' requests for prosecution of Lehman, SunCal, et al. with an actual investigation and possibly even threats of criminal prosecution unless Lehman came up with the money. This is likely to put some pressure on the U.S. Bankruptcy Trustee, Lehman Attorneys, SunCal Attorneys and the execs winding down Lehman's Chapter 11 entity to actually follow-through on the promise.
