D.A. Effectively Calls Raiders' Assistant a Liar

Robert Gammon —  Fri, Oct 23, 2009 at 10:18 AM

Napa County prosecutor Gary Lieberstein is refusing to file charges against Raiders' head coach Tom Cable, despite the claim by team assistant Randy Hanson that Cable broke his jaw and repeatedly screamed, "I'll fucking kill you." According to the Chron, Lieberstein said Hanson kept changing his story about what happened. In addition, the prosecutor strongly implied that the other Raiders' coaches who were in the room at the time of the incident did not back up Hanson's version of events. However, Lieberstein's explanation of what likely transpired also appears to be not credible.

The prosecutor told reporters that Cable never hit Hanson and that somehow Hanson got his jaw broken by being "bumped" out of his chair. Lieberstein said that Cable rushed at Hanson in anger, but then another coach stepped between them, and then that coach bumped into Hanson, who at the time was reclining in his seat with his feet up. The force of the bump, Lieberstein said, somehow resulted in Hanson's gettting his jaw got broken even though he was falling backward.

Hanson's attorney believes that the Napa County D.A. was under pressure to not file charges against Hanson out of fear that the Raiders would move their summer training camp out of Napa if he did. Hanson may end up suing Cable and the Raiders.

However, in the end, we may never learn the truth of what happened. But this much is clear, Hanson greatly hurt his case by at first refusing to cooperate with authorities, and then only coming forward when it became clear that Raiders owner Al Davis was supporting Cable.

I am disappointed that one lie has caused two and a half months' worth of trouble & grief for my team & coach. The mediots who speculated in assumptions, innuendo, and rumors should all apologize to both the team & the coach. This constant hating of anything Raiders, just because one may hate Allen Davis, is ridiculous, juvenile, and has gotten very old very quickly. Please, media, refuse to print things which all seem to border on potential libelous, slanderous, and defamation of character print attacks (because that is precisely what they are). The Raiders should suspend media credential for writers of all such media, as well as begin systematic litigation against both the media as entities and also against the writers as individuals. This type of gang (yes, gang) behavior is wholly unwarranted, biased, and subjective. It is unacceptable and should no longer be tolerated. I am willing to financially help Mr. Davis, the other partners, and the partnership with expenses incurred in taking the above referenced actions, and I am absolutely certain that other fans are as well.
