Oakland's crime rate remains down for the year, with violent crime declining nearly 12 percent, and overall major crimes down 14 percent compared to last year, reports Echa Schneider on her blog, A Better Oakland, which keeps close tabs on the city's crime problems. Through October 13, homicides in Oakland stood at 89, down 19 percent from 2008, when they were 110 at the same point in the year. In addition, all major crimes are in decline, except rapes, which are up 15 percent. Although Oakland's crime rate remains unacceptably high, the numbers indicate that Mayor Ron Dellums' vow to reduce crime by 10 percent this year will come true.

I was just walking out of the market this evening as two men were brutally beating a day laborer in the parking lot. I approached them hoping they would stop. Instead they pointed at me with a pistol. They ran shortly after thinking the police were on there way.
Witnesses say this happens often in this part of town (east), and often it goes on unreported.
