Is $169,300 a year, plus full medical benefits and a sweet pension enough to raise a large family in California? U.S. District Judge Stephen Larson thinks not.

Is a salary $169,300 a year in a lifetime job, plus full medical benefits and a sweet pension enough to raise a large family in California? U.S. District Judge Stephen Larson thinks not.

Larson, who sits on the bench in the Central District of California, said in a prepared statement this week that he is resigning due to his "stagnant" salary, as the costs of raising his seven kids keeps increasing while the purchasing power of his six figure salary is declining. Larson has only been serving since in this position since 2006.

If this government employee cannot make it on 169 large, what does this say about the trials and travails of public employees like teachers, firefighters, and yes, even BART workers, who make significantly less?
