Alameda County to Get Its First Woman DA?

Robert Gammon —  Wed, Sep 9, 2009 at 10:17 AM

The Alameda County District Attorney's Office, long-known for being an old boy's club, may get its first ever woman DA now that Tom Orloff has decided to retire. The Trib and the Chron report that Orloff, who has been district attorney for fifteen years, is recommending that his top deputy, Nancy O'Malley, take over for him. It's good to hear Orloff make that recommendation, especially after a nasty sex discrimination lawsuit revealed some untoward things about his management style. Despite those revelations, Orloff was solid district attorney, although sometimes overly cautious, especially in white-collar crime cases. As for O'Malley, she is an accomplished prosecutor who specialized for years in sex abuse cases, and from all indications, would make a fine DA.

"Orloff was a solid district attorney"

Are you joking? Orloff is the top law enforcement official in Alameda County - is local law enforcement "solid"? He failed to convict the Riders even though one of them fled the country! Neighborhood crime prevention groups complain that chronic crimes aren't prosecuted. Oakland City Attorney John Russo has sought additional prosecutorial powers to make up for the DA's failure to do his job. Tom Orloff, who started his career unsuccessfully prosecuting Huey Newton, has been a terrible district attorney, and Alameda County does not need more of the same. His sudden resignation is an obvious ploy to install Nancy O'Malley without a fair election.
