Police: Hasanni Was Not in Oakland

Robert Gammon —  Wed, Sep 2, 2009 at 10:43 AM

Acting Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said that department investigators "know for a fact" that little Hasanni Campbell didn't go missing from behind a Rockridge shoe store on August 10 as his stepfather claims, according to the Trib and the Chron. In other words, stepfather Louis Ross has lied and is still lying about what happened to the 5-year-old boy. Jordan did not disclose more details on how investigators reached that conclusion, but said Oakland police would not conduct any more searches for the boy unless they got additional credible information about what happened to him. Oakland cops say that the last known public sighting of the boy was on August 6 at a Wal-Mart store in Fremont. Jordan made his comments after the Alameda County District Office decided to not file charges against Ross or Hasanni's foster mother/aunt Jennifer Campbell and ordered them both released from jail.

The police had enough to conclude that the boy was indeed harmed and not missing or lost. However, a DA will not take a case based on very little circumstantial evidence. From my understanding, if a prosecutor is to move forward and file chargers the circumstantial evidence would have to be overwhelmingly geared towards the stepfather. So far, you can convict the stepfather for lying but not for actually killing little Hassani. It almost seems as if the police have evidence (i.e.: street camares, security cameras) that the stepfather is lying about the circumstances regarding Hassani's disappearance. At this point the police are tight lipped but I'm sure their evidence is difficult to ignore. I hope this case gets solved so we can know for sure what happen to that boy.

Maybe police should just try a new strategy: keep your mouths shut until you truly have something. It just looks weak when you try to convict in the media. (Not taking sides but how can you go wrong if you just play it close to the vest?) Still doubt that it was a case of stranger-danger.
