Slap Hitter: A's win--Page 7 news!

Thu, Jun 18, 2009 at 3:23 PM

Dear San Francisco Chronicle: Are there really six pages worth of Bay Area sports stories more newsworthy than an A's win which wrapped up past most people's bedtime? Page 7 is where the Green and Gold rated...below the fold no less.

I get that last place is last place. And I wouldn't tear up the front page for Jack Cust hitting a homer and then flubbing a fly ball, (Ibid. See last week's game story) so instead we get Raiders gossip, Phil Mickelson teeing off three time zones away, auto racing, Ray Ratto being a curmudgeon (see any of last decade's stories) and two Giants stories, featuring a ball club with a longer losing streak than the A's.

At some point "limited interest" becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. The Oakland A's have admittedly brought the blackout upon themselves. Their TV channel is inaccessible for anyone who won't pay cable bills, the radio station is a crackly collection of national syndicated voices who couldn't spell A's if you spotted them the "A", and the less said about the "Oakland" Tribune the better.

The Chron is cutting back, but wouldn't a local team making good while every other sporting event of note is either over or on the East Coast merit maybe a higher profile mention? Tonight the Athletics wrap up their triennial series against the Dodgers, who lead the second-place Giants by a lot. Hey, maybe that's worth a front page sports story? — Kibby Kleiman
