Your TV Causes Global Warming

Robert Gammon —  Tue, Apr 14, 2009 at 10:51 AM

It turns out that televisions are huge energy users, and are contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. So much so, that the California Energy Commission is proposing to force TV manufacturers to make TVs more energy efficient, according to the Chron. Some TVs use more energy than refrigerators. Plasma TVs are the worst offenders by far. Not surprisingly, several manufacturers are strongly opposing the new standards, but one Irvine-based TV maker - Vizio - supports the plan, saying it will only add to manufacturing costs by "tens of dollars." Vizio plans to begin selling an "EcoHD" flat screen TV this year that will meet the proposed standards.

I'm with Zach D. on global warming. It bears all the hallmarks of a false alarm, what with opportunistic politicians and the usual cast of celebutards supporting the idea. Two words: Michael Stipe. I'm betting we're in for climate change-- only it's global cooling.Only it won't be so fun saying "neener" the non-skeptics because I'll be too busy freezing my nutsack off.

Big TVs might be comparative hogs, but not nearly so bad as that Montgomery Ward freezer lurking in the garage or utter lack of insulation (Remember what Mom said, you don't want to heat the whole out of doors).
Replace any fridge or freezer if it's more than a decade old and enjoy your big screen in peace (as long as you unplug it when it's not in use).

Ok, this is why I no longer buy into global warming. Now they're telling me my TV causes it? Give me a break. I'm staying home watching more movies nowadays --on my new TV, by the way --and I'm avoiding driving around in my car and I'm saving some gas as well. Seems to me I'm actually helping the environment. I think our California Energy Commission needs to be unplugged.
